Prescriptions

Today prescriptions have become a major concern due to the cost and number we are using. Years ago our local drug store was able to provide what we needed at a reasonable cost. Today it’s taking away from our nest egg just to cover the cost. Unfortunately there is no easy answer. Also be wary of companies advertising to get drugs for you if you attend their seminars. There are a few options as you will see below.

The Part D being offered may be of assistance to you. It is a stand alone product. This means that you are not required to purchase your Plan D from the same company where you have your other medical coverage. We do offer several Part D plans for you. Part D is not Medicare, but an insurance productHowever, you are required to have some form of Rx. coverage, either Plan D or other types of coverage.. If you are eligible for Part D and choose not to enroll, there will be a penalty when you do choose to enroll. That amounts to 1% per month from the date you were eligible. We offer plans that have a very low cost which are often used for nothing more than a “Place holder” to comply with the guide lines. This program has been a marketing bonanza for companies wanting to get part of the business. Will it work for you ???  Quite likely. Follow the link to the next page to see how it works. There are so many different companies you should compare, also do they cover all of the drugs you use. Many of the companies will not cover everything. You also have, depending upon the company, deductibles or gaps in coverage, location problems Etc. Investigate this as an option, but look at the details for coverage and how it will meet your needs.

Manufacturer benefits. Many manufacturers will provide some drugs free of charge. You need to contact them directly and see if the drugs you are using would be available. This program normally is an income or asset based service. Contact them. Most of them have an online service that you can use. Also ask your Dr. about obtaining samples or working with the manufacturer.

Discount cards. Many Medicare Supplement plans will provide a discount card that works well with generic drugs and brand name to a lesser amount.

Veterans Administration (VA). If you have already enrolled, you should be able to obtain most of your drugs there. If enrolled, contact your local clinic for detailed information. The VA currently has a freeze on new enrollment for many discharged veterans. We still recommend that you make application. When Congress opens the funds for the VA, your name will already be on file and able to be contacted for enrollment. Even if you are very healthy, make application.

Mail Order. This has proven to be the best source for purchasing drugs. Especially name brands. Many times you can do just as well with a Medicare Supplements discount card on generic drugs. There is still a controversy about ordering online and receiving drugs in the mail. The drugs from a reliable source will be the same as you would buy locally.

Medicaid. No longer provides drug coverage. That benefit is now covered under Plan D. They will however help you with some of the cost if you qualify.
